And no, you’re not imagining it.

Illness can change how eating feels in the body. Congestion, ear pressure, sore throats, and disrupted breathing can throw off chewing, swallowing, and coordination. Add in increased sensory sensitivity, and foods a child loved last week may suddenly feel uncomfortable or overwhelming.

That refusal isn’t “bad behavior” or picky eating, it’s often protective.

For many kids, eating comes back naturally as their system settles. But if refusal lingers, meals feel stressful, or nutrition and variety start shrinking, it’s okay to ask for help.

“It looks like a mild tongue tie” is something we hear all the time and while it’s usually said with good intention, it can be confusing and misleading.

Tongue ties aren’t graded by how mild or severe they look in isolation. A frenulum can appear small and still significantly impact feeding, breathing, or speech. On the other hand, a very visible frenulum may cause no functional issues at all.

What matters isn’t how it looks, it’s how it functions.

Tongue ties are identified based on their functional impact:
• Is feeding affected?
• Is suction efficient and coordinated?
• Is the tongue able to elevate, lateralize, and move freely?
• Is breathing, sleep, or speech impacted?

That’s why photos alone, or visual labels like “mild”, can miss the bigger picture.

At The Mouth Rehab, we assess form and function through comprehensive feeding and myofunctional evaluations to understand whether a restriction is actually contributing to challenges and what support is truly needed.
