We’re proud to be advancing our training in orofacial myology, a specialized area focused on improving the function and coordination of the muscles of the face, mouth, and tongue.

Orofacial Myofunctional Disorders (OMDs) can present in a variety of ways. Common signs and symptoms include:

👉Mouth breathing (instead of nasal breathing)
👉Low or forward tongue posture (tongue resting on the floor of the mouth or against/between teeth)
👉Tongue thrust during swallowing or speech
👉Speech difficulties, especially lisping (particularly with “s” or “z” sounds)
👉Messy or inefficient eating (difficulty chewing/swallowing properly)
👉Drooling or poor lip seal
👉Snoring or sleep-disordered breathing
👉Dental issues, such as open bite or malocclusion
👉Facial muscle imbalance or long, narrow face shape
👉Thumb or finger sucking, pacifier use beyond age of 1
👉Tight or restricted frenulum (tongue-tie)

Mouth breathing could be a sign of a blocked airway, and it can have a bigger impact than you think! Dr. Kent Lauson’s flow chart shows how something as simple as a nasopharyngeal obstruction can lead to:

Doulas, midwives, and OBGYNs truly have some of the most impactful and beautiful jobs—I will always stand by that.

Pregnancy, birth, and motherhood has been nothing short of transformative. I am not the same clinician I was before becoming a mother. I love with more intention, I feel with greater empathy, and I advocate for my clients as if they were my own family.

My clients and patients have always been my greatest teachers, but becoming a mother—and navigating the complex world of tongue ties and airway challenges—has profoundly shifted my perspective on assessing and treating speech, feeding, and swallowing disorders.

Being asked to support my best friend as her “doula”—and nearly delivering her baby on the bathroom floor in the hallway—was an experience that shifted everything for me. It deepened my perspective and reinforced the sacredness of this work and this life.

From a Medical SLP specializing in swallowing and swallowing disorders, to now a practice owner specializing in speech, feeding, swallowing, and myofunctional therapy—this journey has been full-circle and deeply personal.

There still isn’t a bottle that truly mimics the breast — and that’s okay! (We may get there someday!!!🤞) What drives me bonkers is the false advertising that some bottles claim they “just like breastfeeding.” (Spoiler: they aren’t.)

Breastfeeding is dynamic — the breast stretches, changes flow rates, is temperature controlled, and even adjusts to baby’s suck.

There are a few things that impact feeding that we can control when selecting a bottle for our cherub:
Shape & Rate 🩵

There are bottles designed with orofacial development in mind that can better support a baby’s latch and oral motor skills.

Some of my favorites?
🔼 👉Dr. Brown’s Narrow, Lansinoh, and Pigeon bottles.
These brands have nipples shaped like a tapered triangle — meaning they encourage babies to use a wide, deep latch, just like on the breast. This encourages babies use some of the same muscles for sucking, swallowing, and breathing at the breast.

If your baby is having a hard time taking a recommended bottle or pacifier, there might be a root cause. Sucking is a reflex, it may not be because they don’t like it, but that it’s challenging or they’re unable to.

Things like oral ties, tension, or motor coordination issues can make it harder for babies to feed well.

🙋🏽‍♀️A feeding therapist (like me!) can help figure out why and create a plan to make feeding easier and more comfortable for you and your baby.
